Applebee's After 9 (half off apps)

Happy Tuesday!

I am very excited to introduce the first segment of My Tailored Nutrition! I will be looking at different categories of foods that specific restaurants offer and give you tips on how to get the most out of what you are ordering.

Tonight my family and I went out for half-off apps at Applebee's, so I figured it would only be right to start out with some of my favorite appetizers from there and to give you a heads-up on what to look for when ordering.

For those of you who do not know, Applebee's offers half off appetizers pretty much every night after 9 or 10...but it really depends on your local restaurant because I know that they vary. When you are a broke college kid like myself, or just like cheap, good food...this is definitely a place to go!

I am going to start this out by listing most of the appetizers and stating their four main nutrient values that most people look for which includes calories (kcal), fat, protein, and carbohydrates.

Don't freak out too much when you see these numbers!

I know these are not the healthiest food choices, but this is the nutrient value that is in the ENTIRE amount that they give you at the restaurant. These appetizers are meant to share. So just know that how much you consume is up to nobody other than Y-O-U. :)

Here are some trends that I noticed when I was looking at the nutrient values:
  • Even if it's a vegetable- its deep fried. Those green beans are about 10-15x more caloric than fresh green beans would be so do not let the green fool you!
  • When ordering chicken wings you can save almost 1/3 of the calories just by ordering regular wings!! The boneless wings are purely deep fried chicken and sauce, so when there is a bone added in the mix, you are actually eating less and probably will barely notice.
  • Another thing to think about is what type of sauce to order on your wings. Believe it or not, Classic Buffalo and Hot Buffalo Sauces have about 20g more fat than Honey BBQ or Sweet and Spicy Sauce (you can also order the sauce on the side, so that you can control how much is being added).
  • Watch out for those sauces you are dipping your food in as well! Bleu Cheese adds another whopping 240 calories and 26 grams of fat, and its pal Ranch is not too far behind.

So the winner of the "Healthiest Appetizer at Applebee's" award goes to the Wonton Tacos. This is the winner because it has the least amount of fat and calories, no trans fat, and it is a great source of protein.
